Karneval: Day 1

         Let the p'arrrrrrr'ty start!

Unique to Laura's area in Germany is a holiday called Karneval. Originally it began because the people wanted to get rid of winter by singing, dancing and making loud noises to scare away the cold. Today it has become a tradition and brings the town together. Everyone dresses up in costumes and parties for five days straight! For this celebration there's a special type of music called schlager. It's a type of folk music for the area with a unique sound and containing specific dances and lyrics. 

Being apart of this special holiday is very exciting and the first day was so much fun!

We started the day around 9:00. We went to Laura's school for a party for the younger kids. She's apart of the presidents club (we would call it student council or student government) and was required to be at this party. It was great to see all the innovative costumes worn by the youth of the Eifel. 

The winner of the costume contest was an alien (something I shall be later this weekend). She looked great. 

Laura, Laura, Kilian (Laura on left brother), his friend Niko and Jannik (who the costume was inspired by) were all Meerkats. They looked superb. They made the masks and sewed tails onto their costumes *which used to be a bear costume, they cut out the bear face. So smart! And innovative.

After the school party, we hung out in the streets and went to City Hall where the kickoff Karneval celebration took place. The whole town gathered and people were singing, dancing and drinking in the streets. It's comparable to Bourbon Street in New Orleans but more exciting and full of tradition.
